Scan Home was founded in the summer of 1983 by Carl and Barbara Propes. Five containers of furniture were imported from Denmark and sold at the old sports arena. The objective was to offer moderately-priced “knock-down” Scandinavian furniture to the residents of Alaska similar to what was available “outside”. Following the container sale Carl and Barbara opened a 3,100 square foot store in early 1984 on West 36th Avenue in Anchorage. Barbara and Carl’s children, Lindsay and Alex, often played in the store while they were growing up. Lindsay recently received her Master’s degree in International Politics from New York University, while Alex received his Bachelor’s degree in Business and Economics in 2010 from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. In 2005 Carl purchased Barbara’s interest in the business.
In 1996 Scan Home opened its first free-standing office furniture store. Since that time the locations have changed, but we still operate a home furnishings store and an office furniture store.
Then, as now, Scan Home’s mission is to bring contemporary furniture from around the world to showcase before our customers in Alaska. Everything that Scan Home carries is intended to be of “good value”, whether it be some of our lower-priced merchandise or our higher-end exclusive styles.
Scan Home has always been fortunate to have a team of highly-motivated hard-working employees. We like to think that working at Scan Home is more than a job – it’s like being with your extended family. Many, if not most, of our employees have been with us for 10, 15 or even 20 years or longer. It is not unusual for customers to come into our stores just to visit with our employees who are like their old friends, whether they’re shopping for furniture or not.
